14.06.2006 - Shots fired in Bollywood office

No-one was injured in the incident at the office of director Mahesh Bhatt in Mumbai, and police are investigating the motive for the attack.

Officers said the gunman had fired two shots after demanding to see Mr Bhatt and being told he was not in.

Police said an underworld gang could be involved. Gangsters have been accused of extortion in Bollywood.

Senior police official Bipin Bihari said the incident "could be some sort of a warning by a gang or it could be that some underworld gang wants distribution or overseas rights of movies".

Mr Bhatt told AFP news agency: "I have not received any threat so far from the underworld and I have not asked for police protection."

The 56-year-old has a reputation for controversial films and speaking out on social issues.

He is directing a film inspired by the 7 July London bombings, about a British Asian Muslim on a suicide bombing mission.
