The United States has confirmed carrying out some form of attack on a suspected al-Qaeda leader in Somalia.
A militant Islamist group in Somalia says its top leader was killed, along with at least eight others, in what it called a US air-strike in the central Somali town of Dusamareeb. That's around 500 kilometres north of the capital Mogadishu. The US regards the al-Shabaab militia as a terrorist organisation. The group has been fighting an insurgency against the Somali government since the Islamic Courts Union lost control of Mogadishu at the end of 2006.
