01.05.2008 - Czech Greenpeace activists start building symbolic bridge in Brdy

A group of Greenpeace activists spent the fourth day in the Brdy forest, 90 km southwest of Prague, occupying the spot height 718, the exact location of the radar base. The bridge, a symbol of people's union, should be a contrast to the radar that, the activists say, is dividing people.

The bridge will be built of wood gathered in the surroundings of the spot height. "The dimension Czech Communists start contesting leading posts before congress ...

of the bridge will depend of how many people will participate in its construction and how much wood we will have," Borakova said. Greenpeace supporters from the surroundings come to see the protesters on the military grounds, bringing them some food supplies, for instance, Borakova said. Civilians are not allowed to enter the military grounds without a permit. Military police spokesman Jan Cermak said 13 people stay on the spot unrightfully. Though the activists committed a misdemeanour by entering the military area, the military police have only checked people's identity cards so far. The military is allegedly not preparinf a radical intervention against the protesters and it will keep monitoring the situation. If the military police see some people walking towards the site in the military forests, they send them back. Cermak also warned that it might be dangerous to enter the military training grounds over old undisposed ammunition at the place. By accident, a worker of the military forests today found two undisposed bombshells in a forest near the site where the activists are camping now. A bomb disposal experts deactivated the ammunition on the spot, Cermak told CTK. In early April, Greenpeace protested against the U.S. radar project, part of the U.S. missile-defence shield, outside the Government Office. Over a week ago, participants in a protest march, organised by the junior opposition Communists (KSCM), wanted to reach the spot height 718 but the military banned this saying the military district is designed for soldiers' training, not for political meetings. The United States plans to build a radar base in Brdy, along with a base for ten interceptor missiles in Poland as elements of the U.S. missile defence shield that is to protect the United States and a large part of Europe against missiles that states like Iran might launch. Most Czechs oppose the project, according to polls.
