Opposition Conservative candidate Boris Johnson has been elected mayor of London, defeating Labour incumbent Ken Livingstone.
The victory in London followed a humiliating defeat for the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour party in local elections in England and Wales. Brown blamed poor economic conditions for the outcome of the elections. The opposition Conservatives captured 44 percent of the nationwide vote, while Labour was relegated to third place with just 24 percent, behind the Liberal Democrats.
