Livingstone. Results showed that Johnson won the support of 1.16 million Londoners in Thursday's election, compared with just over a million for Livingstone, who first took up the post in 2000.

The victory in London followed widespread defeat for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour party in local elections in England and Wales. Brown blamed poor economic conditions for the outcome of the elections. The opposition Conservatives captured 44 percent of the nationwide vote, while Labour was relegated to third place with just 24 percent, behind the Liberal Democrats.
