Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek told radio station Impuls today that if the teachers went on strike, the assumptions that they were linked with the opposition Social Democrats (CSSD) would be confirmed. "It will be an irrational step as it is not true that teachers' real wages will fall," Topolanek said. Educational sector trade unions say that due to the high inflation rate this year, salaries of educational sector employees actually fell this year. They said the final planned sum for individual schools did not correspond with the promised 2.8 percent increase, but only reached some 1.5 percent. The Education Ministry has roughly 71 billion crowns, some 60 percent of the total educational budget, to spend on the salaries in regional education. The trade unions' demands have been supported by Social Democrat leader Jiri Paroubek. According to the data from the Institute of Information in Education, the average monthly wage of teachers at regional schools was 23,858 crowns last year. In general regional education workers' average monthly wage was 19,842. The average wage in the Czech Republic was about 21,700 crowns last year. Trade unions are preparing a number of protests, including a strike, unless their demands are met. ($1=16.340 crowns)
