06.05.2008 - BBC News website wins Webby vote

The BBC News website has won the People's Voice prize in the news category at this year's Webby Awards.

The prestigious awards, to be handed out in June in New York, reward online excellence in a wide range of categories, from retail to music.

The New York Times led the winners with eight Webbys in categories including news, mobile listings and animation. Satire site The Onion won seven.

The BBC picked up two further awards for best music and radio sites.

In every category, the People's Voice award - chosen by a public vote - sits alongside the main Webby award, where the winner is chosen by a jury.

It is the fourth year in a row that the BBC News website has collected the People's Voice accolade in the news category.

Editor Steve Herrmann said it was "fantastic" to win again. "It shows our audience really value what we do," he said.

The New York Times won the main Webby for news, as well as both prizes in the category for best newspaper website.

Apple and National Geographic magazine won four awards each, as did user-confession site PostSecret.

Social networking

Photo-sharing site Flickr scooped both gongs in the best community category.

Flock, a "social web browser", took the main social networking gong, but Facebook took the people's vote.

Both prizes in the movie and film category went to The Simpsons Movie website.

Annie Lennox's official website won the Webby award for best celebrity and fan site.

The Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am will be awarded a special achievement prize for his Yes We Can video, which was created to support presidential contender Barack Obama.

All the nominees and the main Webby winners are chosen by members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.
