Hezbollah militiamen have gained control of large parts of Sunni-controlled western Beirut as three days of fighting in the Lebanese capital threatens the stability of the pro-Western government.
As many as 10 people have been killed in the street battles and 44 people wounded in the struggle between the Shi'ite Hezbollah and Sunni factions. Hezbollah gunmen have forced a television station owned by governing coalition leader Saad Hariri to go off the air in Beirut. The violence was triggered when Hariri's government declared Hezbollah's military communications network illegal. Hezbollah head Hassan Nasrallah said the government decision was a declaration of war.
