Partial results from Serbia's snap parliamentary elections indicate that the pro-European Union coalition led by President Boris Tadic's Democratic Party has won, but failed to gain an absolute majority.
The country's independent monitoring organisation said that with about half of the votes counted, they had taken 39 percent, compared to 28 percent for the ultra-nationalist Radical Party, which favours closer ties with Russia. Prime Minister Vojislav Kostinica's Democratic Party of Serbia took around 11 percent, which could put him in a position to determine who forms the next government. In his first reaction to the results, President Tadic has claimed victory. He also told supporters at his party's headquarters in Belgrade that Serbian voters had chosen a clear path towards Europe.
