the government within its package of reform legislation and valid since the beginning of the year, people receive no sickness benefits on the first three days of illness. From the fourth to the 30th day they receive 60 percent and later 72 percent of their salary. Assessing the government's reform bills at the request of the opposition, the Constitutional Court (US) said the situation where people receive no sickness benefits on the first three days contradicts the constitution. The US abolished the current rules as of June 30, saying that if the lawmakers did not manage to set new rules by then, people would get the same benefits on the first three days of illness as they receive beginning the fourth day, i.e. 60 percent. Necas today said it is impossible to amend the relevant law by June 30, therefore the "early" sickness benefits of 60 percent will come into force. If this remained unchanged, as well as the sickness rate, the costs of the sickness benefits would increase by 2.5 billion crowns by the end of the year, Necas said. The sickness rate will definitely increase, however, he added. He wants the new rules to be passed within the planned bill on sickness benefits under which they should be as of next year paid by employers in the first 14 days of illness, who would see their payments for employees decrease in exchange. The Chamber of Deputies is to discuss the draft amendment in the second reading in June. ($1=16.209 crowns)
