South African police say at least ten people have been killed and dozens injured in Johannesburg following a wave of attacks directed at immigrants.
South African President Thabo Mbeki announced earlier on Sunday that a panel had been set up to look into the xenophobic violence that started a week ago. Local radio said angry mobs had at first attacked houses owned by immigrants from neighbouring Zimbabwe, Mozambique and other countries in Alexandra township. The attacks have since spread to other settlements and Johannesburg's city centre, where properties had been looted and destroyed.
