Rebels from Nigeria's oil-producing Niger Delta say they have blown up a Royal Dutch Shell pipeline in Rivers State and killed 11 soldiers in a firefight.
The army confirmed the Shell pipeline was blown up but denied losing any men. The Niger Delta is home to the world's eighth-biggest oil industry. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend) have led a campaign of sabotage since 2006 to push demands for greater local control over oil revenues.
