A NASA spacecraft has sent back the first pictures of an unexplored region of Mars.
The Phoenix lander touched down on the surface of the Red Planet near its north pole after a 680 million-kilometre journey. The robotic craft is designed to dig into the icy soil to determine if it could ever have supported primitive life. Scientists found in 2002 that Mars' polar regions have vast reservoirs of water frozen beneath a shallow layer of soil.
