The Japanese government has promised to double its aid to Africa within five years.
Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda made the announcement at the opening of a three-day conference on African development in Yokohama, Japan. Fukuda also said that Japan would assist African nations to double their rice production within the next 10 years. More than 50 African countries are participating at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development at a time when the continent is under strain under the effects of rising food and energy prices. Besides talking about how to boost growth in Africa, delegates also stressed the need to meet the UN Millennium Development Goals.
