He made the comments after holding talks in Berlin with his Jordanian counterpart Salah Bashir. Both ministers said they hoped Israelis and Palestinians would agree the basics of a settlement by the end of this year as envisaged by the 2007 Annapolis summit. Steinmeier is expected to begin a Mideast tour on Saturday. He is set to meet the new Lebanese president, Michel Suleiman, in Beirut before travelling to Israel.
