Germany and Turkey have agreed to open a joint university in Istanbul by late 2009.
The move is to bolster cultural and political ties between the two countries. About 5,000 graduates of the German-Turkish University will hold degrees recognised in both countries. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, his Turkish counterpart Alib Babacan and German Education Minister Annette Schavan signed the accord in Berlin.
