A Burmese government official says his government acted promptly after last month's Cyclone Nargis to provide relief.
Deputy Defence Minister Maj. Gen. Aye Mint told an international security conference that the military junta broadcast warnings about the cyclone more than a week before it struck the Irrawaddy delta on May 2. He stressed that Burma was now concentrating on reconstruction and repeated the latest official toll of almost 78,000 dead and 56,000 missing. This comes after US Defence Secretary Robert Gates said at the same conference that the junta's slow response to the cyclone disaster had cost "tens of thousands of lives."
