German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is in Lebanon on the first leg of a tour of the Middle East, told reporters that he saw "signs of hope" after meeting with newly-elected President Michel Suleiman.
Steinmeier added that it was encouraging that Suleiman's inaugural speech expressed support of the international court to try those behind the assassinations of former premier Rafiq Hariri and other anti-Syrian public figures. He also stressed that neighbouring Syria should recognise Lebanon's independence from now on. Beirut is the minister's first stop on a Middle East tour that will also take in Israel and Palestinian territories.
