The European Central Bank is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
The finance ministers of the 15-country euro currency bloc are attending anniversary ceremonies at the ECB's headquarters in Frankfurt. They rejected a call from French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the EU to lower the value-added tax on heating and petrol. In the afternoon, ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, among other European Union dignitaries, mark the anniversary in Frankfurt's opera house. The central bank was founded on June 1, 1998 and is responsible for the euro currency, with one of its main duties being keeping inflation under control.
