German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has expressed serious concern about the lack of progress in the Middle East peace process.
Following talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank town of Ramallah, Steinmeier said the clock was ticking on the two sides' stated goal of reaching a draft peace agreement by November. The German foreign minister said two key issues were holding up talks, namely Palestinian rocket attacks on the Jewish state and the construction of Israeli settlements on occupied territory. The meeting came a day after Israel announced plans to build a further 900 homes in East Jerusalem. Following his meeting with Abbas, Steinmeier visited Jenin, where Germany is supplying vehicles for Palestinian police as part of efforts to improve security.
