Germany's Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul has announced additional programmes to combat poverty and hunger. Speaking on German public broadcaster, ZDF, Wieczorek-Zeul said her ministry would strengthen its aid for agricultural development in developing countries.
She was talking in Rome, where world leaders are attending a three-day summit of the Food and Agriculture Organisation. The main topics on the agenda are rising food prices, climate change and the growing demand of biofuels. United Nations officials say Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will likely use the summit to urge world leaders to help bring down soaring food prices by suspending or eliminating price controls and other restrictions on agricultural trade.
