At the opening of a three-day food security summit in Rome, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged countries to minimise restrictions on agricultural trade.

Besides soaring food prices, climate change and the growing demand of biofuels are on the agenda. Before the conference started, Germany's Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul announced additional programmes to combat poverty and hunger. Speaking on German public broadcaster, ZDF, Wieczorek-Zeul said her ministry would strengthen its agricultural aid in developing countries.
