Thousands displaced from their homes are sheltering in schools and temples. The death toll since torrential rains set in on Monday has risen to 18, including four members of a family killed by a landslide. Disaster relief officials have appealed for deliveries of food, drinking water and clothing. Meteorologists say monsoon rainfalls will continue for days. In the north of Sri Lanka, local media say a roadside bomb has killed six civilians, including two children, who were travelling in a van on their way to a Hindu festival. The army has denied any involvement after Tamil Tiger rebels claimed that the bomb had been planted by an army unit. The military which is conducting an offensive in northern Sri Lanka says 10 rebels and three soldiers have been killed in clashes.
