German Chancellor Angela Merkel has met with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for talks on the second day of her visit to the North African country.
Algeria is the third-largest provider of natural gas to European markets and the Chancellor said that she wanted to establish a gas partnership with Algeria to diversify Germany's energy sources. She has also called for women's rights to be strengthened in the Islamist country. During Merkel's visit a German construction company has secured a contract worth around one billion euros to build the world's third-largest mosque in Algiers. The German leader's return to Berlin was delayed for over an hour due to damage to her German Air Force aircraft.
