17.07.2008 - Judge green lights Guantanamo trial

A US judge has ruled that the war crimes trial of the former driver of Osama bin Laden can go ahead as scheduled on Monday in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The Czech Republic news are represented by www.praguetravelguide.info

Lawyers for Salim Hamdan, a 37-year-old Yemeni, had called for the suspension of the trial following the US Supreme Court's June decision allowing the 265 Guantanamo inmates to challenge their detention in civilian courts. Hamdan is set to be the first prisoner to face a military tribunal since the prison camp was opened in early 2002 at the naval base in Cuba specifically to hold terrorism suspects captured after the Sept. 11 attacks.
