The presidency will not be a matter only for the government to deal with, but the two houses of parliament and the head of state will assist in it as well, Klaus and Sobotka (both Civic Democrats, ODS) pointed out.
"We both have the feeling of certain sobriety," Klaus said, explaining their approach to the EU presidency, scheduled for the first half of 2009.

The three countries have presented their joint programme, including the re-assessment of the EU expenditures, a reform of the common agricultural policy, energy security and climate protection.
Moreover, the situation after the Irish "No" to the Lisbon treaty that is to reform the EU institutions will be dealt with in the months to come.
The Czech state is to earmark a total of 3.3 billion crowns for the preparation and course of the EU presidency.
The planned costs are medium, compared with the previous EU-presiding countries, the cabinet says.
Sobotka said he expected the role of Czech parliament during the EU presidency to be "clear," since both houses have a say in the country's foreign policy.
Klaus said the Presidential Office with the government and parliament representatives are now tuning up the division of tasks for the presidency.
Klaus's sceptical opinions on the EU are well known.
He, however, rejects the label of a Euro-sceptic, stressing he is just a "Euro-realist fighting with the Euro-naives."
