Russia's Interfax news agency quoted diplomat Yuri Popov as saying that Russia would protect its citizens living in the conflict zone. Popov heads the Russian delegation to a joint commission which is trying to resolve the conflict in South Ossetia. He said senior South Ossetian and Georgian officials were due to meet on Thursday. The comments come after several days of clashes in the region. South Ossetia, which broke away from Georgia after a war in the 1990s, has financial support from Moscow. Russia has peacekeepers in the region, but Georgia says the Russian troops back the separatists.
