The jury found Salim Hamdan guilty of providing material support for terrorism, but acquitted him on the more serious charge of conspiring with al Qaeda to commit war crimes. The verdict is the first to be handed down in a full war crimes tribunal at the US prison facility at Guatanamo Bay. The jurors deliberated for just over eight hours. Hamdan is a Yemeni and was taken prisoner in Afghanistan in November 2001. A Pentagon spokesman has said Hamdan will remain classified as an enemy combatant regardless of the outcome of his case and will likely be detained for some period of time thereafter.
