Mauritanian troops took control of the presidential palace after Abdallahi tried to sack senior army officers accused of helping destabilise the country. The government was thrown into a crisis this week after most members of parliament belonging to Abdallahi's party walked out en masse, in a move likely supported by senior military officials. The German government has called for a quick resolution to the situation.
