US President George Bush has criticised China on the eve of his visit to the Beijing summer Olympic Games.
Speaking in the Thai capital, Bangkok, Bush called on the communist country to embrace some of the values of liberal democracies. The US president also used the speech to praise China's economic development, saying he was optimistic about the country's future. Bush has been facing criticism at home for his decision to attend the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Games, despite China's flawed human rights record.
