Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has stepped down.
The former army general made the announcement in an hour-long address broadcast on national television, which he used to defend his record during nine years in office. Musharraf's resignation comes just days after the country's coalition government announced plans to seek to remove him from office through impeachment. In his speech, he rejected government charges of violating the constitution and gross misconduct. Under the constitution, a new president is to be elected within the next 30 days. Until then, the chairman of the senate will be Pakistan's acting head of state. The White House has said in a statement that the US would continue to co-operate with Pakistan in counter-terrorism and other activities. Germany has called on Pakistan to use this opportunity to strengthen its democratic structures.
