19.08.2008 - NATO holds crisis meeting on Georgia

At a NATO meeting in Brussels, foreign ministers have held a crisis meeting to discuss how to respond to Russia's conflict with Georgia.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Russia should pull out of what he called "at least the heart of Georgia" to make possible talks on a durable ceasefire. He warned against any break in dialogue with Moscow. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said NATO's offer of eventual membership to Georgia and Ukraine should be upheld, but added that Russia should not be isolated. This follows a US suggestion to suspend the NATO's dialogue with Russia. The 27-member western alliance is split between countries seeking a tough response to Russia, and those wanting to preserve relations.
