Forty percent of the respondents said they believe that Russia is to blame for the recent conflict in the Caucasus, and 36 percent spread the blame evenly on Russia and Georgia. Almost 60 percent of those polled said that in the context of the Russia-Georgia conflict, they are opposed to the planned installation of a U.S.
missile defence radar base on Czech soil. Russia was called "not democratic" by supporters of all political parties, only supporters of the Communist party (KSCM) were evenly divided on whether Russia is a democracy. The opinion that Russia is to blame for the Caucasus conflict prevails among supporters of the senior ruling Civic Democratic Party (ODS). Supporters of the KSCM most often said they believe the war had been unleashed by Georgia. Voters of the Czech Social Democrats (CSSD) and the Greens (SZ) are mostly convinced that both Russia and Georgia are to blame for the conflict. "The public has slightly sided with Georgia, but quite a large part of Czechs said both parties are at fault," STEM director Jan Hartl is quoted as saying. The threatening of the Czech Republic's security by Russia is mainly feared by supporters of the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and the ODS. The apprehensions are the weakest with voters of the KSCM. One in two respondents who do not consider Russia democratic fears that Russia could threaten Czech security, the poll showed. As far as the U.S. radar base is concerned, people's stands differ depending on their education. "With higher education, people's support for the U.S. radar grows, and it even prevails among university graduates," STEM says. The radar project has been backed by a majority of ODS supporters and a half of SZ supporters among the respondents, HN writes. The rest of the electorate is opposed to the radar, it adds. According to 60 percent of those polled, the Czech Republic should preferentially maintain good relations with the USA, while 40 percent believe it should maintain good relations with Russia. Not even 40 years after the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia is it possible to forgive the occupation to Russia, according to 64 percent of the respondents. Thirty-six percent said Russia should be forgiven.
