Before the president's address, Jan Nemec's new documentary film recalling the August 1968 events was screened. The armies of five Warsaw Pact countries, the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, East Germany, Hungary and Poland, crossed the Czechoslovak border on the night by August 21, 1968 to crush the Communist-led reform process. The Soviet troops' presence on Czechoslovak territory was later "legalised" by a treaty that the National Assembly (Czechoslovak parliament) approved in October 1968.
