The owners of the McDonnell-Douglas MD-82 aircraft, Spanair, said a heating air intake valve was repaired just before takeoff, and experts quoted by Spanish newspapers said this fault alone could not be responsible for the crash. Only 19 of the 172 passengers and crew on board the flight destined for the Canary Islands survived the crash.
