At least 65 people have been killed in a plane crash in Kyrgyzstan. A spokeswoman for Manas airport said that a Boing 737 carrying 90 people and bound for the Iranian city of Mashhaden crashed soon after take-off about 30 km from the capital Bishkek.
The crew had reported a technical problem and tried in vain to return to the airport. There are conflicting reports about the number of survivors. A health ministry spokeswoman said 18 people were taken to Bishkek hospitals. Local authorities said 25 people had survived but later Prime Minister Igor Chudinov revised that figure to 20. Chudinov also said that 51 of the plane's passengers were nationals of China, Turkey, Iran and Canada, but gave no further details. Officials said they would release a full list of dead and survivors early on Monday.
