Indian police have shot dead at least one Muslim separatist demonstrator as authorities tried to enforce a curfew in disputed Kashmir.
Eight people were hurt in two incidents north of Srinagar when troops opened fire to disperse anti-India protesters who defied the curfew. Earlier security forces arrested three senior Muslim leaders to prevent separatists from holding a pro-independence rally. Five killed in Kashmir explosion ... a 1948 promise by India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to give Kashmiri's the right to self-determination. A state government plan to donate land to a Hindu shrine in the Kashmir valley reignited anger over the issue.
