The MDC had planned to boycott the opening of parliament. MDC spokesman Nelson Chamisa had said the party did not expect President Robert Mugabe to address them in parliament until power-sharing talks were resolved. The MDC does not recognise Mugabe as the country's legitimate leader, and wants to see its own chief, Morgan Tsvangirai, given executive power. The MDC won legislative elections in March. Mugabe won an uncontested presidential run-off in June, though the poll was condemned internationally for violence against opposition supporters.
