Mugabe promises to "fight" to retain power ... jeered by Movement for Democratic Change lawmakers, who had earlier threatened to boycott parliament, because they rejected Mugabe's right to open the chamber. During a speech that was nearly drowned out by the opposition, Mugabe said he was optimistic a power-sharing deal was within grasp. The MDC does not recognise Mugabe as the country's legitimate leader, and wants to see its own chief, Morgan Tsvangirai, awarded executive power. It is still locked in negotiations with Mugabe's Zanu-PF party to form a government of national unity. The MDC won legislative elections in March. Mugabe won an uncontested presidential run-off in June, though the poll was condemned internationally for violence against opposition supporters.
