Pope Benedict XVI has condemned a sharp rise in violence against Christians in India.
The pontiff said he was profoundly saddened by attacks that have left at least nine people dead, mostly Christians, in the eastern state of Orissa. Benedict also said from the Vatican that the killing of a Hindu leader that sparked the clashes was deplorable. Hindu mobs have attacked people and damaged churches and Christian homes this week after the murder of the Hindu head in a district where Christian missionaries have been active.
